It's been a long time since there has been a good kdrama that is a mix of romance and thriller. It is one of my favourite genres to watch but very few can execute it properly (I am still scrubbing Born Again out of my memory). Flower of Evil, thankfully, is one of the few dramas that are really good and a must-watch if you are a crime thriller fan like me; let me explain why.
Where To Watch?
What Is It About?
On the outside, Baek Hee Sung (Lee Joon Gi) is a perfect husband and an amazing father. He is the reason for their happiness. But Hee Sung's ideal exterior hides some very dark secrets of his past that he doesn't want his detective wife, Cha Ji Won (Moon Chae Won), to ever learn.
When Ji Won takes on a murder case, she starts chasing after the killer determined to solve the case but what if the criminal she’s been chasing may have been standing next to her all along?
Why You Should Watch It?
1. Gripping story
The narrative of this drama is so compelling that it will grip you from the first scene of the story. If you read the synopsis and are wondering if Lee Joon Gi is the hero or the villain in the drama? Six episodes later, I am wondering the same. One episode I am scared of him another episode I want to protect him at all cost. Either way, this drama will make you sit on the edge of your seat excited but also afraid to see what will happen next.
2. Suspense
I was very skeptical going into this drama because I thought the synopsis already said it all and what is the fun in that? But boy was I wrong! After every episode, I have a new theory about what will happen next but then in the next episode, they turn everything upside down and make me question everything. If what I said doesn't make sense to you, please watch it and you will understand what I am saying.
3. OST and Cinematography
If I can sum this up in one sentence - it just flows. The way the scenes are pieced together threading a narration is very well done. Some characters will be talking about something, there will be other characters in the past and present who will also be doing something related to that topic making the plot feel complete and gripping. The narration, actor's acting skills, and set design along with a complementary background score with really beautiful OSTs. Honestly, the entire Flower of Evil team deserves a round of applause for it.
4. Lee Joon Gi
The last time I was so confused about my feelings towards a male lead wondering if I should swoon over him or be creeped out by him was in October of 2018 when The Smile Has Left Your Eyes was airing. Here though, I have never seen Lee Joon Gi play a role quite like this. Yes, he has done crime, action, and suspense but for real has he ever done a role like this?
Lee Joon Gi's acting is just so so so compelling and incredible to watch. Especially in high-intensity scenes! There were times I had to pause and rewatch the entire scene again because his acting was just so [*Chef's kiss*]. This man has talent in every inch of his body from his eyes to his minute facial expressions it's truly incredible to witness. He will force you to love him even though you should be scared of him.
5. Moon Chae Won
Moon Chae Won is playing the role of a detective and a dedicated wife who loves her husband so much she would even drink poison if her husband gave it to her (her words, not mine - well sorta). I absolutely detest dumb female leads and on the outside, her character may look dumb and sweet but she is really sharp and there is something about her that makes her a perfect match for Lee Joon Gi's character.
Moon Chae Won is doing such an amazing job, you can actually see and feel her going through emotions in front of your eyes without her saying a single word.
Final Thoughts
Flower of Evil is an exceptional drama and if you are wondering if you should give it a shot. The answer is a very big and bold YES! What's not to like about this drama? Actors? Incredible. Writing? Really good. Story? Worth bingeing (if you can wait for it to finish that is - I can't even wait for a week for the next episodes so..)
10/10 recommended.
From the way the story has been going, I find it hard to imagine that I will change my opinion if that happens I will let you guys know but I have a feeling that this drama will soon make its entry into the best K-dramas of 2020 very soon.
Let me know in the comments below if you are watching or planning to watch this drama. Do you have any theory? I have so many! Let's talk!!!
